Grant: COACH Program Funding and Scholarships - Maine East & Maine West

Peer Tutoring - Students supporting students

All three Maine Township high schools offer peer tutoring resources to their students. Historically, Maine East and Maine West have used the COACH program, which is available to all students, at all levels, in all subjects. Maine South provides an innovative online peer tutoring platform designed by students in response to COVID 19 restrictions. While peer tutoring looks different at each school, these programs form important connections between students working toward a common goal.

MTHS Foundation has supported the work of the peer tutoring programs since 1999 and continues to do so today by:
  • Awarding annual scholarships to graduating senior tutors at each school.
  • Granting funds toward student tutor training and supplies.
“Very frequently, ... tutors have taken the exact same course(s) that the tutoree needs help with and can consequently offer guidance from their own personal experience, offering studying tips, etc.”

Peer Tutoring Scholarships
MTHS Foundation offers $1,500 scholarships to selected graduating senior student tutors at each high school. To date, the Foundation has awarded over $40,000 in scholarships to peer tutors. To be eligible, student tutors must graduate no later than August of the current school year and must plan to enter a school of higher learning no later than the fall immediately following graduation.

To be considered for the scholarship, tutors should:
  • Demonstrate reliable and responsible tutoring abilities with a positive and respectful attitude toward peers
  • Have a recommendation from a faculty supervisor
  • Maintain positive scholastic performance
  • Participate in school and community activities

Applications for the peer tutoring scholarships are available from and should be submitted to the Tutoring Coordinator at each school. The deadline for the application is April 1, 2022.
