This year’s benefit celebrated and supported the Maine Township School Based Health Center (SBHC).
Funds raised will be designated to establish a SBHC at Maine West, supplementing the SBHC at Maine East that has been serving all students in the District for more than 20 years. The SBHC, a partnership with Advocate Lutheran General, provides primary medical and mental health screening & treatment for young people who otherwise do not have access to primary care. Last year the SBHC had over 1,300 patient visits, 225 of which were mental health counseling sessions. Staff also administered 1,000 COVID |
vaccines and 215 flu vaccines to both staff and students.
But there are unmet needs, especially at Maine West. Over one third of students at Maine West are in low income households, similar to Maine East, with many from first or second-generation immigrant families, and over half where a language other than English is spoken. A SBHC at Maine West, without the challenge of transportation to an unfamiliar school, will significantly increase access. Maine South students, who represent almost 10% of visits to the SBHC, will also benefit from an additional location to seek care. |
