Constitution Team
Since 1991, Maine South's Constitution Team has dominated the Illinois state competition for We the People: The Citizen and the Constitution, winning every year except one. Representing the state of Illinois in the national finals, Maine South won the national title in 1999 and placed in the top 10 in multiple years, mostly recently in 2011, 2013, 2014, 2017, and 2018.
Students develop research, writing, public speaking, debate, and teamwork skills, and they become experts on civics, government, and Constitutional law. Grants from the Maine 207 Foundation have helped to defray costs for the team to attend the national competition. |
"Constitution Team offers a group of Maine South students the educational opportunity of their young lifetime. They are able to form their own ideas and defend their views about our collective experiment in republican government. Each year these students travel to Washington DC to debate with judges, professors, and scholars. They also push themselves to be the best they can be and win a national championship while competing against state champions from all across the country. None of this would be as possible without the generous support of the Education Foundation and its donors. The support provided for many years goes a long way in making this experience affordable. From myself, Mr Hansen and hundreds of Constitution Team families... thank you!"
